Zoo Atlanta partnered with us (once again) to enhance the visitor experience at their African Savanna exhibit, this time with a custom shade solution for the elephant viewing amphitheater. The goal was to provide ample shade for guests while preserving sightlines and blending seamlessly with the naturalistic environment.
To accommodate the amphitheater’s unique curvature and minimize visual obstructions, we designed and engineered a wraparound-style bent beam cantilever shade. This innovative design allowed us to reduce the number of vertical posts, preserving open views of the elephants while maximizing shaded coverage. We also incorporated a sail-style fabric design, which is uncommon for a cantilever style structure.
Shade Sails: Zoo Atlanta opted for Sunblaze-colored fabric, offering sun protection that complements the earthy tones of the African Savanna.
Structural Elements: The beige powder-coated posts were chosen to match surrounding architectural and landscape features, ensuring visual harmony throughout the exhibit.
The structure not only provides relief from Atlanta’s summer heat but also enhances the amphitheater’s usability for educational talks, keeper chats, and daily guest visits. The shade has a minimal footprint and an organic form that complements the exhibit's design.
This project is part of a broader collaboration with Zoo Atlanta. Over the years, we’ve proudly contributed to multiple enhancements across the park, including:
The Splash Fountain Splash Pad
The SkyTykes® Adventure Zone
…and several other guest-facing installations
Our continued work with Zoo Atlanta reflects a shared vision for creating engaging, comfortable, and inspiring spaces for both animals and guests.
