Project Overview:
When the City of Burlington set out to build a premier pickleball destination, they envisioned more than just quality courts—they wanted an inviting, comfortable environment for players and spectators alike. Superior Shade was selected to deliver a comprehensive shade solution that would enhance the experience, unify the visual branding, and support the complex’s growing popularity.
Challenge:
With North Carolina’s hot summers and the increasing popularity of pickleball, the city needed durable, high-coverage shade structures that would protect both players and guests from the sun without obstructing sightlines. Functionality was also key—structures needed to be outfitted for technology integration and aesthetically aligned with the facility’s fresh, modern look.
Our Solution:
Superior Shade custom-engineered and fabricated two types of shade structures:
-
8-Column Super Dome Hip Shade – 97' x 65' x 14'
-
Coverage: One full championship pickleball court, multiple bleachers, and spectator seating
-
Design: Black frame with eye-catching lime green fabric to match the complex’s branding
-
Features: Custom access points built into the structure for electrical wiring—for lights and future installation of AV components like speakers or digital monitors
-
-
Two Quantity Custom Back-to-Back 3-Bay Dugout Cantilevers – 40' x 8' x 12'
-
Placement: One unit installed over the main walkway near the entrance; the second over additional spectator seating
-
Design & Function: Sleek, cantilevered design to provide maximum shade with minimal posts, maintaining clean sightlines and easy movement throughout the facility
-
Features: Built-in electrical access for lighting and electronics integration
-
Results:
These custom structures have transformed Burlington’s pickleball complex into a vibrant, functional space that keeps spectators cool and engaged. The bright lime fabric draws attention from afar, reinforcing the facility’s visual identity while enhancing usability. With built-in electrical access, the City of Burlington is now well-positioned to add tech-forward features to further elevate the player and guest experience.
Why It Matters:
This project exemplifies how smart, custom shade solutions can do more than provide sun protection—they create comfortable community spaces, support branding, and future-proof public venues for technological integration.
