Mae Simmons Park Creates Comfortable Seating Areas with Multiple Shade Structures

When designing outdoor recreational spaces, shade is an essential amenity that helps families stay comfortable and enjoy parks longer. At Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock, Texas, strategically placed shade structures create inviting areas for parents, caregivers, and visitors while children enjoy the playground and splash pad.

Project Overview: Enhance Comfort and Sun Protection

Mae Simmons Park serves as a popular community destination, offering family-friendly recreation in a vibrant outdoor setting. To enhance visitor comfort and maximize usability throughout the year, the park incorporated a combination of shade structures positioned around the playground and splash pad.

A key objective of the project was to provide shade where families need it most. Rather than concentrating shade in a single location, the structures were strategically installed around the play space. 

The shade features a Hexagon Pinwheel Shade with picnic tables underneath, creating a comfortable gathering space for groups and families.  The unique design offers generous coverage while serving as an attractive focal point. The shade fabric is an alternating turquoise and yellow that adds visual interest while complementing the color scheme of the playground and splash pad. 

In addition, five Hexagon Single Post Umbrellas were strategically placed around the perimeter of the play space. This arrangement allows parents and caregivers to maintain clear sightlines to children playing while enjoying relief from the sun. Each umbrella features turquoise shade fabric, creating a cohesive look throughout the play environment. All six shade structures are made with durable champagne powder coated steel frames, providing a consistent, attractive finish that ties the entire installation together.
